Trouble shooting gets old...
Well, I've installed both Windows 95 and 98 on my OrangePC 620 and 530. Thats the good news. The bad news is that the graphics are kinda pixelated/distorted on the 620 and any attempt to update drivers pooches the Os. Ahhh, I forgot those good old days of 95/98. Works well if I leave it alone and just accept the artifacing. Will try to get networking going, and may settle on this state.
The story is not so great for the OrangePC 530. Any attempt to boot into windows, or install a clean version of windows, crashes the whole computer, OS9 and all. Complete freeze up. No returning to Os9. I plugged the monitor directly into the mac after this crash to try to gain control only to find the Os9 frozen as well. The graphics look great before the system crashes however.
While trouble shooting these issues I discovered a few things:
- my AMD k6-3 400 is not recognized as such by other card despite jumper settings...(k6-2 300 works just fine on both cards...)
- Both cards came with nonfunctional cpu heatsink fans.
- I forgot that I am only using the updated OrangePC app on the Mac side, and not the updated (3.4) files on the PC side, could be some of the problem right there...
-Updating drivers on the PC side can often lead to a reboot-to-BSOD, missing file type of deal, be careful, if you are updating drivers or installing new devices and windows cannot find a specific file it is looking for in the install process, abort! cancel! Don't just skip the file and continue...
At this stage, I'm not going to bother trying WinNT, just yet...
UPDATE: Network is working on the 620, posting this update in IE4 on Win95.
Upgraded the Ram to 128mb, increased the resolution to a tolerable size (1024x786@256colors), no more artifacing, WARNING!!!: after adjusting the display settings in the control panel, windows asks "do you want to specify a new monintor now" SAY NO!!! Unless you like booting to a dead OS...
